NSF Open AI Cellular (OAIC) workshop 2023 will be held on August 9 – 10, 2023, as a hybrid event

  1. In-person event at the Virginia Tech Campus in Blacksburg, VA – The registration for in-person participation is closed.

  2. Online event (via Zoom or Teams) – Available to registered attendees.

The focus of this NSF workshop is to train graduate students who are interested in using the NSF Open Artificial Intelligence Cellular (OAIC) platform in their research. OAIC provides a fully open-source software platform (including, software library, code and documentation) for prototyping and testing AI-driven RAN controllers enabling 6G cellular research. It consists of two components – (1) OAIC controller (OAIC-C) framework – an integrated, open-source (both simulation and hardware) 3GPP-compliant cellular platform to design, develop, and prototype novel AI-driven (or model-based) RAN control functions. The platform utilizes O-RAN architecture (to host such RAN controllers as xApps and rApps) and interfaces with open-source 5G cellular software (such as, srsRAN) using SDRs (for hardware) and ZeroMQ (simulated), and (2) OAIC testing (OAIC-T) framework – an open-source software platform that supports automated, multitasking and distributed testing of OAIC-C and its RAN controllers. More information about the publicly available code and documentation about OAIC-C and OAIC-T) can be found here: www.openaicellular.org.

We expect to support a maximum of 20 attendees for in-person participation. The selected participants will be compensated for the travel related expenses. Any student who is interested in being considered for the travel funding is required to submit a signed letter of support from their advisor that explains how OAIC 2023 will help the student with their research. Other attendees are also welcome to apply for the workshop using the application link below, and if selected, they will be expected to cover their own travel expenses.

OAIC 2023 will be a 2-day event. During the workshop, the participants will be involved in hands-on training sessions and tutorials that will expose the attendees to the OAIC platform and its capabilities. The attendees will carry out various sample experiments to program both the OAIC controller (OAIC-C) and OAIC testing (OAIC-T) framework. In particular, workshop participants will work with example AI-driven RAN controllers (such as, KPIMON xApp, Scheduling xApp) using the OAIC platform.
